Bookham Firefly

ALL things considered, and in spite of the bitter winter and early spring weather, our 2011 shows were a great success.
It was good to see the Hall at Great Bookham stuffed with wonderful exhibits for the Early Primula Show in March.
The main Primula and Auricula Shows too were well supported, and we gained new members from among the many visitors.See the EVENTS page for dates of the 2012 shows.

WORK SHOP 2012

Our first afternoon work shop was a real success in 2011 – it was standing room only! This year we will holding another on Saturday, May 19th, at the Old Barn Hall as usual at 2 pm. The work shop is aimed at beginners, and this time we also hope to give a little help to new and aspiring exhibitors. All are very welcome, and the event is free and open to all. There will be a small plant sale on the usual members’ 50-50 basis for Society funds.

SINCE the Spring your committee has been working on (among other things!) a revised set of standards for exhibition, and preparing a revised Show Schedule.

E-Mail addresses

IT would be very helpful if Society members would supply the Committee with their email addresses.
It makes it much easier if we can contact members individually when organising the shows, plant sales, work shops, seed distribution etc.
OF course we undertake not to pass your details to anyone else, or pester you with any unnecessary messages.
Our Publicity Officer, Lesley Roberts, will coordinate the list.
Please send your details to pops08@btinternet.com THANK YOU

SEEDS

Thanks to those members who have already donated seed for the Seed Exchange, but we could still do with a lot more before the closing date in December. Remember, those who give seed get first priority when it comes to the allocation! Please see the SEED EXCHANGE page for details.

THE FLORISTS MISSION

The primary aim of the National Auricula and Primula Society is to promote our plants and raise and exhibit new and improved cultivars. This is done according to criteria laid down in the main as long ago as the 1700s by our predecessors, the old time Florists.

If you are new to hybridizing and exhibiting, and would like to get in touch with other members trying to raise new and worthwhile plants, please email the Web Master and we will try to put you in touch with like-minded folk.

If you are a beginner and need help, don’t forget there is a list of people to contact in the latest Year Book.

PUBLICATIONS

Allan Guest’s book is now available at a reduced price for members at Society Shows and the annual general meeting– ‘The Auricula – History, Cultivation and Varieties’is a hardback, with lots of fabulous photographs.

There are still a few copies remaining of 'The Auricula' by F.D.Horner,which Ray Weeks produced as a Southern Section publication of interest to all auricula growers.

Originally published in 1877, it was transcribed in the 1955 Year Book of the Northern Section of the Society. It is being serialised in our own Year Books, but won’t be completed for some years. Here’s your chance to get the whole package in one go!
