Bookham Firefly

2010 was a bit chilly at the outset, and the early show in March really demonstrated the skill of members
in producing exhibition plants whatever the weather.
All three shows at our new venue in Great Bookham were a great success,
and we were delighted to welcome exhibitors from all three sections of the Society.
We had a grand time!

ANNUAL SEMINAR – OCTOBER 2nd, 2010

Our next event is the annual meeting and all day seminar, once again at the Old Barn Hall, in the Harrison Room,
with an 1100 a.m. start.

Members are reminded that the date and venue have changed since the 2009 Year Book was published.
The Old Barn Hall, Church Road, Great Bookham KT23 3PQ is off Junction 9 of the M25 - SEE THE EVENTS PAGE FOR MAP.

We will begin the day with our annual general meeting, then at 1145 a.m. we have the first of the day’s talks.
This year we welcome Jim Jermyn – well-known plantsman, author and former proprietor of Edrom Nursery.
He will be giving an illustrated talk on ‘Primulas, Their Cultivation as Garden Plants’.

At 2.30 p.m., Steve Popple, raiser of some top auriculas, and expert judge, will be speaking on
‘Show Auriculas – Maintaining the Standards’.
This will be an opportunity to refresh ourselves on Florists standards for exhibition – a must for beginners!!!

There will be the usual MEMBERS’ PLANT SALE and light refreshments available.
Several cafes and pubs are located within easy walking distance of the Hall.

THE FLORISTS MISSION

The primary aim of the National Auricula and Primula Society is to promote our plants and raise and exhibit new and improved cultivars. This is done according to criteria laid down in the main as long ago as the 1700s by our predecessors, the old time Florists.

If you are new to hybridizing and exhibiting, and would like to get in touch with other members trying to raise new and worthwhile plants, please email the Web Master and we will try to put you in touch with like-minded folk.

If you are a beginner and need help, don’t forget there is a list of people to contact in the latest Year Book.

PUBLICATIONS

Allan Guest’s new book is now available at a reduced price for members at Society Shows and the annual general meeting– ‘The Auricula – History, Cultivation and Varieties’is a hardback, with lots of fabulous photographs.

There are still a few copies remaining of 'The Auricula' by F.D.Horner,which Ray Weeks produced as a Southern Section publication of interest to all auricula growers.

Originally published in 1877, it was transcribed in the 1955 Year Book of the Northern Section of the Society. It is being serialised in our own Year Books, but won’t be completed for some years. Here’s your chance to get the whole package in one go!
